In our core areas at Seneca East, teacher-based teams, divided by department (grades 5 - 12), have been meeting regularly before school to examine a number of things that will help in assisting student achievement levels (social studies, science, language arts, and math). Every year, scores from the ACT, OAA and OGT show not just the strengths and weaknesses of the class but also of individual students as well. Teachers in this TBT (teacher-based team) process looked at class, period, and individual data and analyzed just where our students were in greatest need. Based on their findings, teachers then brainstormed action plans to attack weaknesses and build on strengths that they found and began inserting these plans into their daily, weekly, and unit lessons. Currently, the teams continue to work on strengths and weaknesses with the students in their classes and are also reflecting on the efficiency and effectiveness of the instituted plans. Using our own research over the past two years, this type of calculated examination of scores and action plan development has allowed us to close gaps in weaker subscores within the OAA and OGT; consequently, our students are the winners. Student strengths have been identified and augmented throughout the year while student weaknesses have been identified giving teachers the knowledge on where increases in work and curriculum have to be done.
Lilly Schiefer, 3rd grade student, was presented with awards by Mr. Troy Huth on Wednesday, April 15. Mr. Huth is the Fire Prevention Educator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Lilly’s Fire Safety Poster won first prize for his district and was one
of the top twelve entries in the entire state. Lilly’s work will be on display during the
Ohio State Fair this summer. Also participating in the presentation were Gina Smith,
AVR Fire Chief Lonnie Jaynes, and Chris Goshe.

To keep educators current in our profession, professional development is offered through the Ohio Department of Education, regional Educational Service Centers, and through private companies. However, at Seneca East, professional development in the way of technology is offered to our staff much closer to home. Mr. Jon Darkow, Seneca East’s biology, anatomy, and environmental science instructor, offers technology classes for our staff on a regular basis throughout the year so that our teachers have the opportunity to increase their knowledge on everything from Apps to Google Forms to Project-Based Learning. Besides also offering Ashland University credit, this professional development has served our faculty well in providing opportunities for increased learning in the area of technology right here at our own school
On Thursday, March 26th, grandparents attended Grandparents' Night with their grandchildren and visited classrooms, shopped at the "Under the Sea" Bookfair, enjoyed a snack, listened to Rick Gillet talk about scuba diving, and helped their grandchild make a jellyfish craft. Our students are lucky to have such great support from the community and their grandparents!
